Stepping Up: Reducing the Number of People with Mental Illness in Local Jails
Stepping Up is a national initiative administered by the National Association of Counties, the Council of State Governments Justice Center and the American Psychiatric Foundation to reduce the number of people with serious mental illness in jails. (see). The project, funded by an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health, surveys community mental health, community substance use, jail, and probation administrators in 950 U.S. counties over time to determine how they are able to better integrate these systems to reduce overuse of local jails as mental health facilities of last resort. Researchers are evaluating implementation mechanisms of the Stepping Up policy approach.
