Summer Bookmobile Let's Get Reading!!! (each Friday of the summer program)
Audience:
Class of 2026 for both Lansing School District & Waverly Community Schools
Purpose: Increasing Literacy (in all formats) is one of the pillars of the federal GEAR UP Grant, and the work plan we follow.
Goals: GEARUP did three bookmobiles during the summer program on the last day (Friday) of each week’s program. Three buses did stops in Lansing for 45 minutes each (10am, 11am, 12pm) at various schools and community centers, and one bus did the same for the Waverly District.
Bookmobiles, by definition, create excitement so students look forward to getting books and increase the likelihood of becoming frequent readers. (Our aim was to create the same excitement as a summer ice cream truck.)
A bookmobile is, by definition, direct outreach into the community, creating swift opportunities and breaking down barriers; its focus is promoting growth and serving at-risk populations efficiently, effectively and, most importantly, equitably.
