On Thursday, March 18, 2021, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) Club and LVMA (Latinx Veterinary Medical Association) gave six virtual outreach talks to 82 Detroit International Academy (DIA) students using the Teams platform (8:00am-3:20pm EST). DIA is a public school for young women with a focus on biomedical science and veterinary medicine. The talk’s title was “Introduction to Veterinary Medical Careers” in which we started out by introducing ourselves (where we are from, our journey, and what we did to help us get into veterinary school). We then moved on to ice breakers in which we asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “What do you think veterinarians do?” and “What do you think you need to do to become a veterinarian?”. The objectives for the talk were to summarize the steps to becoming a veterinarian, what veterinarians do, what animals veterinarians work with, and discussed example careers in veterinary medicine. Example careers discussed were shelter medicine, feline medicine, small animal medicine (orthopedics and soft tissue surgery-board certified specialty), large animal medicine, veterinary research, and zoo/exotic/wildlife medicine. We concluded by providing resources, a link to MSU CVM’s requirements, and providing the PowerPoint with our email addresses. We had time for questions throughout each talk and especially towards the end of each talk.
