Developing Michigan's Pipeline to Veterinary Medical Education
A significant problem affecting the retention for the target group is a challenge of equity. The problem of under-representation is not just one of low numbers or percentages; it is also one of access to the profession. There is a general concern in urban and rural private veterinary practices alike in both Michigan and nationally about a critical need existing for veterinary professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds as an issue of equity and an issue of serving urban populations. Simply stated, too few persons of color and other disadvantaged backgrounds are veterinarians.
